Shubman Gill faces real trial as India trail 1-2 in Tests, says Chappell

Former Australia captain Greg Chappell believes Shubman Gill has displayed greatness with the bat and shown glimpses of his potential as a young captain, but said his real test begins now with India trailing 1-2 in the five-match Test series against England. India lost the third Test against England at Lord's by 22 runs to go 1-2 down in the series. The two teams will face off in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Manchester starting July 23. "As India prepare for the final two Tests of their series in England, the spotlight now shines firmly on their 25-year-old captain Shubman Gill. A bright young talent, he has shown greatness with the bat and glimpses of leadership potential, but this moment will define his trajectory as a Test captain. "It's not an easy environment in which to grow, but it's the one he's in - and the stakes couldn't be higher," Chappell wrote in his column in ESPNcricinfo.com. Chappell wants Gill to set the tone for the side with his ...

'Soft' Dukes ball under review, says manufacturer after player complaints

In the eye of a storm, the manufacturer of the Dukes ball on Friday said it will conduct a thorough review following widespread criticism of the "soft" balls used in the first three Tests between India and England, according to a report in the BBC. The on-field umpires have regularly changed the balls in the ongoing five-match series as they were unable to retain hardness and were going out of shape quickly, particularly post 30 overs. The whole process has caused delays to the match proceedings. Following criticism by India captain Shubman Gill and former English pacer Stuart Broad, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will collect as many used balls as possible and return them to the company that produces Dukes balls by the end of the week. "We will take it away, inspect and then start talking to the tanner, talking about all of the raw materials - everything," Dilip Jajodia, owner of British Cricket Balls Ltd, who make the Dukes, told BBC Sport. "Everything we do will be ..

Time running out for Karun Nair; Batter could be overlooked in Manchester

Cricket has given Karun Nair a 'second chance' but he doesn't seem to have made the most of it on the tour of England and could end up being the sole name on the chopping block when India's playing XI for the fourth Test is finalised. Back in the playing eleven after eight years, the 33-year-old has got starts in majority of his six innings but he has not been able to convert them into something substantial. He has looked good in the middle, especially while driving the ball but the rising ball from length has bothered him. In the second innings at Lord's, he misjudged the line and length of an incoming Brydon Carse delivery to offer no shot, finding himself trapped in front. Batting at number three, India expect solidity from Nair, who gate-crashed into the national team after piling up a mountain of runs on the domestic circuit. With India trailing 1-2 in the five-match series and the next game still a week away, the management needs to take a call -- stick to Nair or invest in t

ENG vs IND: Gill's aggression triggered England's beast mode at Lord's- Ali

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali sees shades of Virat Kohli in Shubman Gill's aggressive on-field demeanour, but feels the India batter's approach during the Lord's Test may have triggered a stronger response from the hosts. Gill has been quite aggressive during the series, and his conduct at Edgbaston mirrored Kohli's famous century celebration at the same venue in 2018. "My take is, it's fine. I think he's just trying to be competitive in front of a fight and very similar to Virat, I think it's fine," Moeen, currently featuring for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Global Super League (GSL), said during an interaction on Wednesday. "But then, obviously the other team, what you've done is, I think you've actually brought out the best of England and the fight and that beast England can be. "And I think it's a different side of England. They've shown all the players that it's great for the series to win. I don't know why it's getting criticised." Former India players Sanjay ...

Vaughan says Gill lacked usual calmness and technical precision at Lord's

India skipper Shubman Gill didn't look as "technically tight" and lacked the usual calm when he came out to bat in the second innings of the third Test, said former England captain Michael Vaughan even as he praised the visitors' fighting spirit on the last day at Lord's. Gill has looked in great touch in the series, scoring a century in the first Test at Headingley and then breaking a plethora of records on way to a century and double ton in Birmingham, which India won by 336 runs. However, he could only manage 16 and 6 in the Lord's Test, which India lost by 22 runs despite a fight-back by all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and the tail-enders. "When things got spicy on the third evening, I felt that brought the best out of England for the remainder of the game. Shubman Gill did not look as technically tight or calm as usual when he came out to bat on the fourth evening, but his team fought so hard on Monday in a fabulous Test," said Vaughan in his column in 'The Telegraph'. Jofra Archer says Ganguly's Lord's celebration inspired his fiery spell

Sourav Ganguly's iconic shirt-swinging at the Lord's balcony after a famous win over England back in 2002 was Jofra Archer's inspiration to deliver the game-changing spell against India in the high-pressure third Test here, home skipper Ben Stokes has revealed. Ganguly had taken off his shirt to celebrate India's win in the high-voltage NatWest Trophy final and it remains one of the most dramatic moments in international cricket to this date. On Monday, an inspired Archer removed the dangerous Rishabh Pant with a peach before taking a return catch to dismiss Washington Sundar as India went down by 22 runs despite trying their best to recover from those body blows. "I just said to him this morning, 'you know what today is, don't you?' So he told me. 'You know that highlights package of India knocking off 300-odd back in the day with Ganguly (waving shirt).' "He (Archer) thought that was the World Cup final. He thought that was six years today," Stokes said after an energy-sapping ..

Shubman Gill says Pant's run-out turned the tide in narrow defeat

Shubman Gill was "extremely proud" of the fight that his team put up after being down and out but rued the absence of one fifty partnership and Rishabh Pant's first innings run-out in their 22-run defeat against England in the third Test at the Lord's. Ravindra Jadeja fought gamely with a dogged unbeaten 61 off 181 balls and nearly took India home with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj before the team got all out for 170. Extremely proud it was as close a Test match as it can get, played over five days and comes down to the last session. I was pretty confident of our chances with plenty of batting left. We needed a couple of 50-run partnerships but we weren't able to get that, Gill said during the post-match prize distribution ceremony. He did admit that had Pant not been run-out in the first innings, India could have got a 70 to 80-run lead and may not have to chase nearly 200 on a tricky fifth day track. Asked if players are putting too much emphasis on personal milestones as KL
