The US Midwest dug out from a snowstorm that closed schools and businesses, as millions braced for dangerous sub-zero temperatures that could shatter records. School districts in Minnesota and Wisconsin cancelled classes and government offices, universities and businesses shuttered, with the mercury expected to drop to a polar -40 Celsius. "Dangerously cold and potentially record breaking temperatures and wind chills are expected by Tuesday and Wednesday," National Weather Service (NWS) said Monday. "The arctic air, together with brisk winds, can lead to dangerously cold wind chill values." Delhi in grip of cold wave, min temp settles three notch below average

Cold wave conditions remained unabated in the city with the minimum temperature settling at 5.5 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average. The maximum temperature was recorded at 18.9 degrees Celsius, also three notches below the normal, said a Met department official. The humidity oscillated between 94 and 51 per cent. According to the Met office, cold wave conditions are likely at isolated pockets of the city. "There will be shallow fog in the morning. Gusty winds likely to prevail during the day and cold wave conditions likely to prevail at isolated pockets. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 19 and 5 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. On Sunday, the minimum temperature settled at 5.2 degrees Celsius while the maximum was recorded at 18.8 degrees Celsius.

Cold wave continues in Pb, Hry, Amritsar coldest at 0.5 deg C

Cold weather conditions continued to prevail in most parts of Punjab and Haryana, the MeT department said Monday. Amritsar in Punjab was the coldest in the region at 0.5 degrees Celsius, the weatherman said. Several other places in the state reeled under piercing chill with the temperature in Faridkot settling at 1.2 degrees, followed by Bathinda (1.4 degrees), Adampur (1.8 degrees) and Halwara (2.7 degrees), the Meteorological Department officials said. Union territory of Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperature of 5.3 degrees Celsius, weather department said. In Haryana, Karnal was the coldest at 3.4 degrees Celsius followed by Bhiwani (3.9 degrees), Sirsa (4.2 degrees), Hisar (5.4 degrees) and Rohtak (6 degrees).

One-way traffic restored on Jammu-Srinagar NH

One-way traffic was restored on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway Monday as authorities allowed stranded Kashmir-bound trucks carrying essential commodities along with passenger vehicles from here, officials said. The highway was opened for light motor vehicles from Jammu to Srinagar on Sunday after six-day closure following heavy snowfall and incessant rains which had triggered multiple landslides and shooting of stones at various places along the arterial road. "Stranded trucks and passenger vehicles were allowed to move towards Srinagar Monday morning after agencies concerned cleared the road of the debris especially at Anokhi fall in Ramban district, an official of the traffic department said. He said traffic is moving smoothly from Jammu to Srinagar, while no vehicle was allowed from Srinagar side in view of one-way restrictions which are in force for the past many months. Cold wave conditions at some place in UP, Agra coldest at 3.4 deg

Cold wave conditions prevailed at some places in west Uttar Pradesh with Agra recording a minimum temperature of 3.4 degrees Celsius, the coldest in the state. Met officials said Monday. Night temperatures fell below normal limits in the Allahabad, Varanasi, Faizabad and Lucknow divisions of Uttar Pradesh, the meteorological (Met) office here said. However, the minimum recorded was above normal in the Gorakhpur division, it said. The minimum temperature was 3.4 degrees Celsius at Agra, Met officials said. They warned that cold wave conditions were likely to occur at isolated places over west-UP.

Sun shines bright after snowfall in Shimla

Sun shone bright in most parts of Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla and Kufri which received snowfall till Monday morning, the Meteorological department said. Intense cold wave conditions continued unabated in major tourist spots like Kufri, Manali, Dalhousie and Shimla which recorded a low of minus 5.8 degrees Celsius, minus 5.3, minus 1.3 and minus 1 degrees Celsius respectively. Minimum temperature in Solan was minus 5.8 degrees Celsius, minus 1.4 in Bhuntar and minus 0.4 degrees Celsius in Chamba, the weatherman said. Tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state with a low of minus 17 degrees Celsius, the Met department said, adding that the minimum temperature in another tribal district Kinnaur's Kalpa was minus 7.6 degrees Celsius. Drass shivers as mercury plunges to minus 31.4 deg C

Mercury in Drass, the second coldest inhabited place in the world, plunged 31 degrees below freezing point even as Kashmir continued to reel under intense cold wave conditions prevailing over the past two months, MET officials said on Monday. Drass in Kargil district registered a low of minus 31.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, an official of the MET department said. The maximum temperature recorded in the remote area of Jammu and Kashmir was minus 12.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the official said. In Leh district, the mercury settled at a low of minus 15.9 degrees Celsius last night while the maximum temperature was nearly two degrees below freezing point on Sunday, he added. Cold morning in Delhi, minimum temps settles at 5.5 deg Celsius

Delhiites woke up to a cold morning on Monday with the minimum temperature settling at 5.5 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average. The humidity was recorded at 94 per cent at 8.30 am, said a meteorological (Met) department official. The Met office has forecast clear skies during the day. "The skies will be clear. Strong gusty winds are likely to prevail during the day. The maximum temperature is likely to hover at 19 degrees Celsius," the weatherman said. More snowfall, rains predicted in HP from Jan 30

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy snowfall and rains in Himachal Pradesh from Wednesday, an official said Sunday. A fresh western disturbance is very likely to affect western Himalayan and adjoining plains from January 29 and it would lead to scattered to fairly widespread rain and snowfall in the state from January 30 to February 1, Shimla MeT centre director Manmohan Singh said. On Sunday, Shimla received 1.1 cm of snowfall and Kinnaur's Kalpa got 0.3 cm of snowfall from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, he added. Janjehli in Mandi district, Kufri and Kharapathar in Shimla district also received 2 cm of snowfall during the period, he added. The maximum temperature in Keylong was minus 5.2 degrees Celsius, minus 2.8 degrees Celsius in Kalpa, minus 1.4 degrees Celsius in Kufri, 2.9 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie, 5.3 degrees Celsius in Manali and 6.8 degrees Celsius in Shimla on Sunday. Cold day in Delhi, mercury likely to drop further on Monday

It was a cold Sunday in the national capital, with the minimum temperature settling at 5.2 degrees Celsius, four notches below the average, the IMD said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the temperature to dip further on Monday with cold wave conditions during the day and moderate fog in the morning. "Clear sky with strong surface winds during the day and cold wave conditions are likely to prevail at isolated pockets," the official said. The maximum and minimum temperatures on Monday are likely to settle around 19 and 4 degrees Celsius respectively, the official added. Sunday's maximum temperature settled at 18.8 degrees Celsius, three notches below the average for this time of the season. The humidity levels oscillated between 100 and 49 per cent. Cold wave conditions continued in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday with prominent tourist destinations of the state shivering below freezing temperatures, the Meteorological Department. The minimum temperature in Manali of Kullu district was minus 5 degrees Celsius, followed by minus 4.2 degrees Celsius in Kufri of Shimla district, minus 1.5 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie of Chamba district and minus 0.2 degree Celsius in the state capital, said Manmohan Singh, Director MeT Centre Shimla. Tribal district Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place with a low of minus 17 degrees Celsius from 5.30 pm Saturday to 8.30 am Sunday, he said.
