Cyclone Vayu to hit Kutch as deep depression: IMD chief
Cyclone Vayu is moving towards westwards and is "likely to hit Kutch as a deep depression," said IMD director Jayant Sarkar on Saturday."Due to the Cyclone Vayu Kutch along with nearby areas such as Saurashtra will receive heavy downpour for a couple of hours. Though the wind speed in these regions will not be very strong," he added.The IMD director also assured that the Cyclone will not cause any substantial damage in the areas where it will come.The Cyclone is expected to move towards North Gujarat in a weakening state on June 18. Light to moderate rains will continue in the areas such as Junagadh and Porbandar.The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next few days.The Indian Coast Guard, the Navy, the National Disaster Response Force and the state authorities are on high alert. Army teams have been kept on stand-by.
3 of family killed as truck crashes into house in Odisha
Three members of a family were killed Saturday after a sand-laden truck rammed into their house in Koraput district in the early hours, police said. The incident took place at Bhejitput under the jurisdiction of Sunabeda police station of the district after driver of the truck lost control over it, a police officer said, adding, the deceased, a couple and their eight-year-old daughter, were crushed to death. All them were asleep at the time of the accident, he said. The sand-laden truck was travelling to Damanjodi from Semiliguda, the police officer said. The driver fled the scene and the truck has been seized, the police officer said. Traffic movement was disrupted on Semiliguda-Sunabeda road for sometime as angry locals staged a road blockade the after the accident, he said. Senior police and district officials went to the spot to pacify the protesters, he added. Efforts are on to catch the driver, the police officer said.
Bridge in China collapses, sending vehicles into river
An entire section of a roadway bridge has plunged into a wide river in southern China, sending two vehicles into the water and leaving two people missing. Heyuan city police said the 120-meter (390-foot) section collapsed early Friday morning. China's Xinhua News Agency reported that two nearby security guards rescued a 44-year-old man, and two other people remained missing. Dramatic footage on state broadcaster CCTV showed two arches of the six-arch bridge falling apart within seconds and without any apparent warning. The bridge spans the Dongjiang river in Guangdong province. The cause of the collapse is under investigation. Southern China has been hit with heavy rains and flooding that has caused 61 deaths, but it wasn't clear if swelling waters were a factor.

A search operation to retrieve the mortal remains of six of the 13 people who were killed in the AN-32 crash on June 3 were hampered due to inclement weather in the area, the Indian Air Force (IAF) said on Saturday.

Underground fire in UP forest triggers panic
An underground fire in Mohammadi range forests of Uttar Pradesh left scores of neighbouring villagers panicked and puzzled. Smoke was seen gushing out through the cracks in the ground and at some places land had turned into embers, said residents of Bela Pahara and Muda Galib villages in South Kheri forest division. 72-year-old Hukum Singh of Muda Galib said he has never been witness to such a scene. He feared that the fire may damage his crops. Another villager, Bhai Lal (75), termed the scene as a natural miracle, which he had never heard of or seen earlier. These include assistance for house building, clothing, utensils and assistance to fishermen for replacement/repair of damaged nets and boats, fish ponds, fish seed farms and replacement of drought and milch animals.This is in addition to Rs 197.59 crore which was released to the Puri Collector on June 10 for disbursement towards house building assistance.So far, a total amount of Rs.1481.05 crore has been released to different departments and collectors .

Mumbai: Man dies after iron-rod falls on him in under-construction building
A businessman died after an iron rod fell on him in an under construction building in Parel area here on Thursday.The dead person has been identified as Rahul Saraf.While entering the building, a rod fell on him injuring him severely. He was admitted to Kem Hospital from where doctors advised him to be taken to a private hospital.He was then admitted to Global Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Three dead in tree collapse incidents in Mumbai
Three persons have died in incidents of tree collapse in the city since Thursday, a civic official said. Mumbai and surrounding areas have been receiving spells of rain amid strong winds in the last couple of days. A little after 4 pm Friday, a tree fell on Nitin Shirvalkar (43) in Anushakti Nagar in suburban Govandi, an official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's disaster management unit said. Shirvalkar was rushed to BARC Hospital nearby and was declared dead on arrival by doctors there, he added. Earlier in the day, two persons were injured when a tree branch fell on them near Vijaykar Wadi on SV Road in Malad around 6.30 am Friday, the official said. A top Union Ministry of Earth Sciences official Friday said cyclone Vayu is likely to recurve and hit Kutch on June 17-18, hours after Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced that the storm posed no threat to the state as it had moved westward. A rescue team has recovered the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR) of Russian-origin AN-32 aircraft of the Indian Air Force at the crash site in Arunachal Pradesh Friday, an IAF spokesperson said. Cyclone Vayu will change its path again and is likely to hit Kutch on June 17-18, a top official of the Ministry of Earth Sciences said on Friday. The very severe cyclonic storm will also reduce in intensity and turn into a severe cyclonic storm by Saturday morning, a senior India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said. "The system is moving nearly westwards affecting Porbandar, Devbhoomi Dwarka districts with wind speed 50-60 kilometres per hour gusting to 70 kilometres per hour and Gir Somnath and Junagarh districts with wind speed 30-40 kilometres per hour gusting to 50 kilometres per hour. The wind speed over these districts is very likely to decrease gradually," the Cyclone Warning Division said in a 5.30 pm bulletin.
