More than 180 trains in Gujarat affected in last two days due to Cyclone Vayu: Railways

Services of more than 180 trains have been affected due to Cyclone Vayu in the last two days, with over 132 trains to Gujarat being cancelled, the railways said Friday. The railways has cancelled 132 trains and short terminated 54 trains between Wednesday and Friday in view of the cyclone hitting coastal Gujarat. Cyclone Vayu is likely to recurve on Sunday and hit the Kutch coast of Gujarat, a top official of the Ministry of Earth Sciences said. Till Thursday, 88 mainline trains were cancelled and 40 were scheduled to be short terminated over the Western Railway. "On June 14, 44 more trains were cancelled and 14 more were short terminated in view of cyclone as a precautionary measure taken by western railway in view to safeguard the interests of passengers," according to a statement issued by the railways. Cyclone Vayu to recurve, may hit Gujarat's Kutch, says official

Cyclone Vayu is likely to recurve and hit the Kutch coast of Gujarat, a top official of the Ministry of Earth Sciences said Friday. "Vayu is likely to recurve on June 16 and hit Kutch between June 17-18," M Rajeevan, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, told PTI. The intensity of the cyclone is likely to get reduced, Rajeevan said, adding that it may hit the coast as a cyclonic storm or a deep depression. He said the Gujarat government has been alerted about the possible recurvature of the cyclonic storm. Cyclone Vayu was to hit the Gujarat coast on Thursday, but it changed course on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. It skirted the Gujarat coast affecting Gir, Somnath, Diu, Junagarh and Porbandar.

4 dead as truck collides with jeep in UP's Mohammadabad

Four people, including a four-year-old, were killed and as many injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a jeep near Mohammadabad town on Friday morning, police said. According to an eyewitness, the truck was moving at a high speed when it rammed into the jeep. The deceased have been identified as Deepur (25), Seepu (21), Aarohi (4) and driver Mohit (26), Superintendent of Police Swami Prasad said. In Lucknow, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condoled the loss of lives in the accident and directed officials to ensure adequate medical treatment to the injured. The police is yet to disclose any information about the truck and the accused.

Cyclone Vayu moving westwards affecting Porbandar, Dwarka: IMD

Very severe cyclonic storm Vayu is moving westwards affecting Porbandar and Dwarka in Gujarat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday."VSCS 'VAYU' moved westwards, near Lat 21.0degN & Long. 68.2deg E, 170 km west-southwest of Porbandar (Gujarat). The system is moving westwards affecting Porbandar and Devbhoomi Dwarka. Thanks to Goa CM, stranded passengers get food at airport

Passengers of an Air India flight bound for Goa, who were stranded at the Mumbai airport and agitating over delay in departure, were provided food after intervention by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, a passenger said Friday. The passenger, Ketan Bhatikar, a functionary of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), was one of the fliers on the delayed flight and called Sawant, who is in New Delhi, for help Thursday midnight. However, the state-run carrier claimed it arranged food for the passengers after the flight got delayed. "A system outage at Air India had left many passengers, including me, stranded at the Mumbai international airport Thursday night. Three killed in road accident in Odisha

Three persons were killed and an another was injured in a collision between a scooter and a motor-cycle near Chandipur in Odisha's Balaore district on Friday, police said. The accident took place when two youths on a scooter proceeding from Balasore towards Chandipur had head-on collision with the bike moving from the opposite direction, a police official said. One of the youths riding the scooter and both on the motor-cycle died, he said adding the fourth, who was pillion riding the scooter was seriously injured. The injured was admitted to a hospital in Balasore town for treatment.

Five killed, eight injured in temp-truck collision: cops

Five persons, including two women and a 5-year-old child, were killed and eight others injured when a pick-up truck collided with a tempo near here. The accident took place in Khailam village under Aliganj police station, police said Friday. The injured have been admitted to the district hospital, where the condition of two of them is said to be critical, they added. UP Irrigation Minister Dharampal Singh rushed to the district hospital on getting the information about the accident. "The driver of the pick-up truck has been arrested, said Superintendent of Police (Rural) Sansar Singh. He identified deceased as Shriwati (45), Krishnapal (30), Mamta (27) and Mamta's son Keshav (5). The identity of the fifth deceased is yet to be ascertained, he said.

Porbandar: Heavy losses incurred due to Cyclone Vayu, claim fishermen

Fishermen claimed to have incurred significant losses and damage to their boats in the wake of gusty winds generated in the region due to Cyclone Vayu.The fishermen also claimed that they did not have enough space for parking their boats, due to which severe damage was caused.The fishermen have appealed to the government to take steps for ensuring sufficient places for boats to be parked. Bihar CM announces ex-gratia for families of storm victims

Two days after 14 people were killed in lightning and thunderstorms in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the victims. According to information available from the disaster management department, five persons each died in Patna and Nalanda, three were killed in East Champaran and one in Samastipur as lightning struck parts of the state. "Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed his grief over the deaths due to thunderstorm and lightning. He has announced immediate payment Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the victims as ex-gratia," an official release said. Kumar has also directed government officials to ensure proper treatment of those injured on Wednesday and prayed for their speedy recovery, the release added.

13 killed in dust storm, hailstorm-related incidents in UP

At least 13 people were killed in dust storm and hailstorm-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh, the office of the state relief commissioner said on Friday. Siddhartha Nagar bore the maximum onslaught with four deaths reported from the district, followed by Deoria where three people died and Ballia where two died, state Relief Commissioner G S Priyadarshi told PTI. One person was injured, while 22 animals have also died. As many as 93 houses were damaged across the state, the official said. One death each was reported from Ayodhya (snake bite), Lakhimpur Khiri, Kushinagar and Sonbhadra, he said. Dust storm and hailstorm had hit various districts of the state on Wednesday. Fire breaks out at dumpyard in airport premises

A fire broke out in a dumpyard in the airport premises on Friday, but none was injured in the incident, officials said. The fire was noticed in the dumpyard near Gate no.6 where trash, including wooden waste was dumped, they said. Three fire tenders pressed into service doused the flames. Nobody was injured in the fire nor did it hinder flight operations, they added.

2 dead, 26 injured in accidents in J&K's Doda district

Two persons were killed and 26 others injured in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Friday, officials said. A woman was among the two persons who died and a teenage girl was seriously injured after their car plunged into the Kalnai river on the Thathri-Kilhotran road in the afternoon, the officials said. The three persons were rescued and taken to a hospital, where the doctor declared Dooni Chand and Neevi Manhas dead. The injured girl is still unconscious and undergoing treatment, said Mohd Anwar Banday, the sub-divisional magistrate of Thathri area, adding that an investigation was on. In another incident, a bus carrying 35 passengers overturned at Gatsu area of the district in the morning, Superintendent of Police Shabir Ahmed Malik told PTI. Two dead in tree collapse incidents in Mumbai

Two persons have died and another has been injured in incidents of tree collapse in the city since Thursday. Mumbai and surrounding areas have been receiving spells of rain amid strong winds in the last couple of days. Two persons were injured when a tree branch fell on them near Vijaykar Wadi on SV Road in Malad around 6.30 am Friday, an official of the disaster management unit of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. Shailesh Mohanlal Rathod (38) was declared 'brought dead' at Shatabdi Hospital while the other person was undergoing treatment, said the official. On Thursday, Anil Ghosalkar (48) was critically injured when a tree collapsed at Takshashila Cooperative Housing Society in suburban Jogeshwari. He succumbed to the injuries at Holy Spirit Hospital Friday, the official said. A notice had been issued to the housing society on April 24 to get the overgrown trees on its premises trimmed, the official added.

Fire breaks out in garment factory in Ludhiana

A major fire broke out in a garment factory near Shivpuri Chowk here on Friday, officials said. The fire also engulfed some adjoining buildings, officials said. Fire tenders were deployed to douse the flames. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (East) Amarjit Singh said.
