Fire breaks out at under-construction Navy warship, one worker dead

A fire broke out at an under-construction warship of the Navy at Mazgaon Dockyard here Friday evening in which one worker was killed and another injured, an official said. A Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDSL) spokesperson, in a statement, said a "minor fire" broke out in yard 12704 in the dock in south Mumbai at 4 pm, in which a contractual worker died due to asphyxia and burn injuries. Another worker has suffered "minor burn" injuries, the statement said. Twenty-three-year-old Bajendra Kumar was rushed to nearby JJ Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival, fire brigade sources said. The identity of the injured is not immediately known. Fire brigade sources said they received a call about the fire at 5.57 pm and it was classified as Level three, which indicated it was serious. 3 of family killed as car overturns in Rajasthan

Three members of family died and five others sustained injuries when their car overturned in Jaisalmer district on Friday, police said. The accident occurred in Sankda Police Station area, the police said, adding that the driver lost control of the vehicle trying to evade a cow. Hukam Singh (60), his wife Tiloki Devi (55) and their son Bhagwan Singh (40) died in the crash. The family was going to Jaisalmer from Mulana village, police said. Five others were injured of which two are in a critical condition, they said.

Mumbai: One contract worker dies in fire at Mazagon Dockyard

A contractual worker on Friday died in a fire which engulfed an empty ship at Mazagon Dockyard here."A major fire incident took place on Yard 12704 (Visakhapatnam), the first class of Project 15 B during operations in a tank at MDL today at 4 PM which was brought under control by 7 PM," said a statement issued by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL)."One contract worker unfortunately succumbed possibly due to asphyxia and burn injury and another suffered minor burns. An inquiry has been constituted to ascertain the cause of the fire," the statement read.The man was declared brought dead at JJ Hospital.More details are awaited.

A man died in a fire which engulfed an empty ship at Mazagon Dockyard here.The person was succumbed to his injuries and was declared brought dead at JJ Hospital.Five fire tenders and four water tankers are present at the spot. "Under-construction warship 'Visakhapatnam' caught fire at 5.44 pm. The blaze erupted on the second deck of the ship," chief of the city fire brigade P S Rahangdale had said earlier. "Fire is confined to second and third deck of the warship. Fire-fighting operation is underway along with Dockyard fire-fighters. Smoke has spread in the warship," Rahangdale said. A defence official said one person, who was trapped inside, was dead. "Bajendra Kumar (23) was brought dead to the hospital," the Chief Medical officer of state-run JJ hospital said.

Deeply pained by death of children in UP accident: Priyanka

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Friday said she was deeply pained by the death of children in an accident in Uttar Pradesh in which a pick-up van plunged into a canal and asked party workers to provide all help to the families of the deceased. Bodies of all the seven children were recovered during search operations after they went missing when a pick-up van plunged into the Indira canal in Nagram area on the outskirts of Lucknow early Thursday, officials said. The vehicle was carrying 29 people, who were returning home after attending a wedding function in Barabanki district, neighbouring Lucknow. Twenty-two of them were rescued. "Deeply pained by the news of the death of children in an accident in Nagram near Lucknow. In this hour of grief, my condolences to the families of the deceased. I request the Congressmen to reach out to the grieving families and extend all assistance," Priyanka Gandhi tweeted.

ST driver killed, 20 passengers injured in Yavatmal accident

A state transport driver Friday died after his bus collided with a tractor in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district, police said. Twenty passengers in the bus received injuries in the accident that took place on Pandharkavda Road at around 10:30am, an official said. "The tractor was parked near Batbori village. In an attempt to save a buffalo that came on the road, the bus swerved and hit the tractor. Bus driver Ajay Shrivas (57) was declared dead on arrival at the Yavatmal government hospital. Twenty passengers have been hospitalised and their condition is stable," he said.

Squadron leader's mortal remains consigned to flames

The mortal remains of squadron leader Vinod Hariharan (27), who died in the AN-32 jet crash in Arunachal Pradesh, were brought to the Air Force Station at Sulur near here Friday. The officials and staff of the station paid homage to Hariharan, a resident of Ondipudur here. The body was then handed over to the family with full military honours and taken to the residence in a flower-decked military vehicle and kept for the public to pay homage, official sources said. The body was then moved to the electric crematorium in Singanallur, where the family members performed the last rites. As a mark of respect, a gun salute was accorded to Hariharan before his mortal remains were consigned to flames. Lightning kills woman, injures four

A woman was killed and four others injured after getting struck by lightning here, an official said on Friday. Gita Devi (35), a resident of Rekcha village, had gone to a temple near Liwadi village with four other villagers on Thursday evening, when the lightning struck. Gita Devi died on the spot. The other four received burn injuries, Rekcha village head Prahlad Singh Rawat said. The injured were getting treatment at the Mori Primary Health Centre, he said.

Fire tenders reached spot late, claim shopkeepers at furniture market

Shopkeepers, whose units were gutted in a major blaze at a furniture market here on Friday, have claimed that the fire tenders reached the spot late in south Delhi's Kalindi Kunj area by which time the fire had spread extensively. However, the Delhi Fire Service has rejected all the claims saying the fire tenders were rushed to the spot as soon as it got the information about the incident. The furniture market is spread over 2,000 square yards and the fire had spread rapidly as a large amount of wood and plastic material was stored in the area. Several furniture shops were gutted in the fire, a senior fire official said, adding that no one was injured as the fire broke out early morning and the shops were closed. : Five people were killed and two injured when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling was involved in a head-on collision with a truck in Suryapet district of Telangana Friday, police said. Four women were among the five who died in the accident that occurrednear Huzurnagar, the police said. Eight people were in the autorickshaw when the accident took place. Will act against bus owners found guilty of overloading: Himachal CM

A day after the Kullu bus accident that left 44 dead and 34 injured, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said the state government would initiate steps to prevent such incidents and take stern action against the bus owners found guilty of overloading. Hailstorm in Pulwama damages standing crops, power poles

A massive hailstorm Friday caused extensive damage to standing crops including horticulture, besides uprooting trees and electricity poles, in many parts of Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. "A massive hailstorm has wrecked havoc in horticulture and agriculture fields of Pulwama district. Joint teams will be sent for damage assessment and relief first thing tomorrow," an official of the district administration said. The officials said while it was difficult time for the farmers, the administration will do whatever can be done for helping the affected people. The hailstorm also uprooted trees and damaged electricity supply infrastructure in the district, which has closed down the main roads and link roads at many places, but the administration has geared up men and machinery for early restoration. Two die in Dutch historic plane crash

A pilot and passenger died after a historic light aircraft crashed in a field in southern Netherlands on Friday after colliding with another plane, rescue workers said. The Piper Super Cub, belonging to a flying museum near the southern city of Breda, allegedly collided with another Piper before smashing into the ground around 1.00 pm (1100 GMT). "Both people in the plane died in the crash," the Middle-West Brabant rescue services said. "The second plane managed an emergency landing," it added in a statement, saying its two occupants were unharmed. Friday's accident was the third in the Netherlands this year involving a light aircraft and was being investigated by the Dutch Safety Board. No injuries were reported in the previous two cases, the Dutch Safety Board said on its website.
