UP: BSA clerk arrested in 4.5 crore midday meal scam, 21 lakh recovered

A Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) office clerk was arrested by police here on Saturday in connection with a midday meal scam. According to police the scam is suspected to have caused a loss of Rs 4.5 crore to the government."The Crime Branch was investigating a case related to corruption in midday meal. Akhilesh was arrested and Rs 21 lakh has been recovered from his house," said Ajay Sahani, Superintendent of Police, Barabanki.Police said the accused used to transfer money meant for midday meal into the fake accounts of his accomplices."In the last five years at least Rs 4.5 crore appears to have been siphoned off," the officer said.Further investigation is underway.

MP: Case registered against Cong leaders for violating MCC

Police on Saturday registered a case against eight people, including sitting Congress MP from Ratlam, Kantilal Bhuria, and state minister Surendra Singh Baghel here for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC)."A complaint was received along with video evidence that the Congress party leaders and workers were campaigning even after the official campaigning hours had ended," said Dinesh Solanki, Station House Officer (SHO)."A case has been registered against eight people including state minister Surendra Singh Baghel, Congress Ratlam MP Kantilal Bhuria, District Congress president Mahesh Patel, and Alirajpur MLA Mukesh Patel," he said.The police registered the case under Section 126 of the RP (Representation of the People) Act, 1951, and 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for "disobeying an order duly promulgated by a public servant".Polling for eight parliamentary constituencies of Madhya Pradesh will begin at 7 am on May 19.

Kidnapped businessman rescued, 6 arrested

Six people have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a 64-year-old Mumbai based businessman from the national capital, the police said on Saturday."Mumbai based businessman who was staying at Hotel Taj was kidnapped on Friday. Kidnappers also took Rs 30 lakh as ransom and fled. The police was informed at 10:50 pm," said Eish Singhal, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), New Delhi."A Verna car was used for the kidnapping. We constituted different police teams to nab the gang. Based on call detail record (CDR), the car was tracked down at Laxmi Nagar. Six people were arrested and the man was recused," he said.The case was solved within six hours. Further investigation is underway.

J-K: Terrorist killed in Sopore encounter identified

The terrorist who was killed in an encounter in Sopore area of north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Saturday has been identified as a resident of Awantipora, police said."The terrorist killed in Hathlangoo area of Sopore has been identified as Waseem Ahmad Naikoo of Barsoo, Awantipora," police said in a statement.According to police records, Naikoo had joined Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) in February."He had joined proscribed terror outfit JeM after he went missing from his home in February 2019," police said.A case has been registered and the matter is being investigated.

Head constable injured in gun fight in Ghaziabad

A head constable and an alleged criminal sustained bullet injuries in a gunfight here on Saturday, officials said. Both persons are out of danger and are receiving treatment at a local hospital, they said. Kavi Nagar Police Station officials signalled two bike-borne men to stop near Mainapur Road here at 1.30 pm as per routine checks, they said. After halting, the men fired on the police party and tried to escape, officials said. An alert was flashed to police posts in the area and a team chased the bike, City Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said. Finding themselves cornered, the accused fired on the personnel, who retaliated fire in defence. One of the accused sustained a bullet injury on his leg, while the other managed to escape, he said. Rj govt asks police to register FIRs at SP, DC offices

Rajasthan government on Saturday directed the state police to make arrangements to register FIRs at the offices of the SPs and deputy commissioners if a local police station refuses to lodge the case. Addition Chief Secretary (Home) Rajeeva Swarup wrote a letter to DGP Kapil Garg, asking him to make arrangement to register FIRs at the offices of SPs and deputy commissioners. The FIRs registered there will be forwarded to police stations for investigation and departmental action will be take against the SHO for not registering the case at his police station. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had taken this decision in the wake of the Alwar gangrape case in which the victim's husband has said his complaint was not registered initially by police.

3 arrested over forging signature of Telangana CM

Three people have been arrested for alleged involvement in creating a fake document for mutation of land here with the forged signature of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, police said Saturday. They were arrested based on the May 15 complaint by the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) of Rajendranagar against a man about the forged letter in the name of ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti party with the forged signature of Rao. The letter, addressed to the Collector of Ranga Reddy district, was for mutation of the land in Gachibowli area, a police release said. The forgery came to light when the RDO got suspicious about the letter submitted by the man at the Collectorate on May 14 and cross checked with the Chief Minister's Office and the TRS. It was found to be "a fake, forged and fabricated document," the release said adding a case was registered and the man and two others were arrested Friday for their alleged involvement in the matter. Manish Tewari claims his fake audio clip being circulated to mislead voters; case registered

A case was registered on Saturday on a complaint filed by Congress candidate Manish Tewari from Anandpur Sahib constituency, who claimed his fake audio clip was being circulated on social media to misled voters. In the complaint, former union minister claimed the fake audio clip was being circulated with an "ulterior motive to mislead voters" of the constituency and "malign his image". Acting on the complaint, police registered a case against unknown persons. Rupnagar Senior Superintendent of Police Swapan Sharma said a case was registered under relevant sections of the IPC and Representation of People Act. Tewari is pitted against SAD candidate and sitting MP, Prem Singh Chandumajra.

Woman among two arrested for duping people in South Delhi

Two persons, including a woman, were arrested for allegedly duping people by luring them through a matrimonial website in South Delhi, police said Saturday. The accused have been identified as Ashwani Sharma, 38, a native of Uttar Pradesh and a 41-year-old woman from Kolkata. The duo was residing in Uttam Nagar area of Delhi, they said. According to police, a case was registered at Greater Kailash police station after a complainant alleged that some unknown persons stole his wallet and mobile phone. Thereafter, they swindled Rs 1.50 lakh from his bank account linked with his Paytm through his mobile phone. During investigation, technical reports from the concerned banks, Paytm and Payphone were obtained following which a tip-off was received about the accused and they were arrested from Uttam Nagar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Vijay Kumar said. Second-year student found hanging in Visva Bharati University

A second-year undergraduate student of Visva Bharati University here was found dead in his hostel room on Saturday, police said. Partha Das (19), a student of Mathematics honours, was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room this morning by his roommate, officials said. "Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide. However, the exact cause of the death can only be ascertained after postmortem examination," a police official said. Partha, who hails from nearby Rampurhat area, returned to the hostel on Friday from his home, according to other hostellers. He didn't go for breakfast on Saturday morning and was in his room. When his roommate returned, he found the door bolted from inside. Other students then broke into the room and found him hanging, officials said. He was then taken to the university hospital where doctors declared him dead, they said. Police said they have interrogated other students staying in Nandan Hostel, where the incident has happened.

Danve alleges corruption in Jalna water pipeline scheme

Maharashtra BJP president Raosaheb Danve Saturday alleged irregularities in the internal water pipeline laying scheme of the Congress-controlled Jalna Municipal Corporation (JMC). Addressing a press conference here, Danve, the local MP, said the state government had sanctioned Rs 150 crore for laying internal water pipelines in the town but the "contractors cum corporators" of the civic body indulged in corruption. "Under the scheme, the JMC was supposed to construct nine water storage tanks and lay pipe lines. However, the contractor did not follow the DPR (Detail Project Report). Some councillors who have questionable background forced the contractor to change the route of the pipelines," he said. Danve said the JMC paid Rs 96 crore for the works whose quality is dismal. "The BJP-Sena government granted funds for internal pipelines, but the JMC controlled by the Congress did not utilise the funds properly and committed irregularities," he alleged.

Three drug peddlers arrested in J&K

Three alleged drug peddlers were arrested in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said. Accused Akshay Shan and Mohammad Anzer Beigh were held at Kishtwar district and 370 tablets of TRM-Spas (Tramadol) were recovered from them, they said. The seized tablets are sedatives, which the arrested used to allegedly sell to youths, an official said. In another incident in Samba district, one Manoj Kumar was arrested and 170 tablets of an intoxicant were recovered from him during vehicle check at Tapyal on Jammu-Pathankot Highway, officials said. All three arrested have been booked under the NDPS Act, further investigation is underway, they said.

Odisha court sentences Maoist leader to life imprisonment

Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda, who was arrested five years ago in Odisha's Ganjam district, was on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here for waging a war against the nation. Panda, who was implicated in 134 cases in different police stations of Odisha, has been acquitted in 52 cases by varied courts so far. This was the first case in which the 50-year- old home-grown rebel leader was convicted by the local court. Additional Sessions Judge S K Sahoo, while pronouncing life term for Panda, also slapped Rs 10,000 fine on him. He will have to undergo additional jail term of one year incase of default in paying the fine amount. Panda was arrested by police from a residential house at Mangalabarapeta Street under Bada Bazara police station limits here on July 18, 2014 by a team of police led by then SP (Berhampur) Anirudha Singh. During his arrest, police had seized around 800 grams gold ornaments, a revolver, a number of mobile phones and SIM cards, pen-drives, laptop .

Boy riding pillion dies in accident

A nine-year-old boy, who was riding pillion on a scooter with his father, died Saturday after a truck rammed into their two-wheeler here, police said. The incident occurred in Sion-Koliwada area at around 1 pmwhen the truckrammed into the scooter from behind, due to which the boy, Ranjit Kanojia, fell down and came under wheels of the truck. He died on the spot while his father Manish Kanojia sustained injuries to one of his hands, a police official said. People gathered at the spot roughed up the driver of the truck before police personnel reached the spot and arrested him. The driver (24), identified asAjab Pal, has been booked under various sections of the IPC, the official added.

Gold theft reported at Shankar Mutt

Twenty-five tolas of gold donated by devotees have been reported missing from the Shankar Mutt here, police said Saturday. A case of theft has been registered following a complaint by an official of the mutt. The complainant suspected the role of an insider behind the alleged theft, police said adding investigation was in progress. One tola gold is equivalent to around 10 grams.
