Four arrested for smuggling heroin in Jammu

Four members of an inter-state gang of narcotic smugglers were arrested and heroin was seized from them in Jammu city, officials said Thursday. A police team intercepted a vehicle at Kunjwani area in the city and seized 175 grams of heroin, they said. Nisar Ahmed of Shopian in Kashmir,Sandeep Kumar of Jalandhar in Punjab, Sandeep Kumar of Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh and Raghbir Singh of Jalandhar were arrested and a case was registered against them, they said.

SC agrees to hear Dhananjay Munde's plea seeking stay on HC order

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on Friday a plea of Maharashtra Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde seeking a stay on Bombay High Court order directing registration of FIR against him in connection with alleged illegal purchase of government land in the state's Beed district.A Bench comprising of Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Ajay Rastogi said it will hear the plea of Munde tomorrow after his lawyer mentioned the matter for urgent hearing.Munde, a member of NCP, is the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

Man arrested along with woman accomplice after encounter in Delhi

A 34 year-old man was arrested along with a woman following an encounter with police in northwest Delhi's Netaji Subhash Place on Thursday morning, an official said. The accused, Shrikant Reddy, a "dreaded criminal", suffered two bullet injuries during the encounter and doctors have stated that he is out of danger, police said. Reddy and his accomplice Pooja were intercepted by police personnel at Netaji Subhash Place following a tip-off, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Northwest, Vijayanta Arya, said. But, when they refused to surrender and shot at the personnel, police opened fired at Reddy, she said, adding that he was injured and rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors said he is out of danger. Reddy, who is named in 12 cases including murder, had allegedly stolen a motorcycle along with his accomplice from Netaji Subhash Place on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, the officer said. Not much difference between jungle rule & UP law and order: Cong

The Congress hit out at the Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday over the killing of the state Bar Council president, saying there was not much difference between "jungle rule" and law and order in the BJP-ruled state. Darvesh Singh, the first woman president of the state Bar Council who was elected to the post three days ago, was shot dead at a court premises in Agra on Wednesday allegedly by a lawyer who then tried to kill himself. "Right under the nose of Ajay Singh Bisht's (Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath) government in UP, the bar council's first woman president was shot dead. There is not much difference left between jungle rule and the law and order system in BJP-ruled UP," Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted. Agra City Additional Superintendent of Police Praveen Verma had said Singh was shot thrice by lawyer Manish Sharma, who had been her long-time acquaintance.

Illegal purchase of govt land: SC to hear Friday Maha MLC's plea against Bombay HC order

The Supreme Court Thursday agreed to hear on June 14 a plea of Maharashtra MLC Dhananjay Munde against the Bombay High Court order directing registration of a case against him in an alleged illegal purchase of government land case. A vacation bench of justices Indira Banerjee and Ajay Rastogi said it will hear Munde's plea on Friday in which the NCP leader has sought stay of the high court order which directed police to file a case against him for allegedly purchasing a land at Pus village in Ambajogai tehsil of Beed district. The high court's order was passed on Tuesday by a division bench on a plea filed by one Rajabhau Phad, who alleged that the said land which belonged to the government was purchased and given to the Belkhandi Math in Beed as gift. As per law, the land cannot be transferred without the government's permission, the initial petition had said.

Nigerian arrested for duping people

The Delhi police has arrested a Nigerian national for allegedly duping dozens of people under a fraudulent scheme, officials said on Thursday. The matter came to light after two persons, who have been collectively duped of more than Rs 1.5 crore, approached the police, the officials said. The police's cybercrime cell -- Cyber Prevention, Awareness and Detection Centre (CyPAD) -- arrested the accused. According to the police, the Nigerian has been staying illegally in India and has duped a number of people, mainly from the southern states, the police said. Further details are awaited.

Gold worth Rs 17 lakh seized at Hyd airport, one held

: Smuggled gold weighing over 500 grams worth over Rs 17 lakh was seizedat the international airport here from a passenger, who allegedly hid the yellow metal in his rectum, Customs officials said. According to the officials, the passenger who arrived from Dubai here Wednesday was intercepted and after verification was found to be carrying 720 grams gold paste in his rectum. After melting the gold paste 538.090 grams of 24 carat gold was extracted and it was valued at Rs 17,56,863, they said.

Complainant arrested for faking robbery in Odisha

A complainant in a robbery case in Kendrapara district has turned out to be the perpetrator of the crime, with the police arresting him for allegedly hatching the plot to swindle cash. Prakash Das (26), who had lodged a complaint on Monday that bike-borne miscreants had snatched Rs seven lakh from him near Tarando on Cuttack-Chandaballi state highway, was found to have faked the robbery, police said. The accused, an employee of a private e-commerce company in Kendrapara district, had allegedly authored the plot to swindle the cash, officers at Nikirai Police Station here said Das, a native of Sabalanga village, was arrested on Wednesday and he confessed to the crime, they said. 4 railway policemen booked for thrashing scribe in UP

Four railway policemen, including a station house officer, were booked for allegedly beating up a journalist in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, an official said Thursday. In a purported video of the incident, which went viral on social media late Tuesday night, the accused Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel, dressed in plain clothes, can be seen repeatedly slapping and punching television journalist Amit Sharma. Subsequently, the scribe was detained by the railway policemen. Work in west UP courts stall after killing of state Bar Council prez

Work in courts across western Uttar Pradesh came to a standstill on Thursday as lawyers protested against the killing of the state bar council chairman a day ago. Muzaffarnagar district bar association president Syed Naseer Haider said the incident was condemned by lawyers in a condolence meeting. The call for the boycott was given by the state bar council. Bhima Koregaon case: Pune Police raids accused Stan Swamy's home

A Pune police team has conducted searches at human right activist Father Stan Swamy's residence here in connection with Elgaar Parishad (Bhima Koregaon) case.The search was conducted on Wednesday morning around 10:30 am and police have recovered some electronic materials from his house.On January 1, violence erupted at an event to mark 100 years of the Bhima-Koregaon battle, leaving one dead and several injured, including 10 policemen. The Delhi Police on Wednesday seized 500 kgs of cannabis worth approx Rs 1 crore and arrested three suspected drug dealers in connection with the seizure.The Crime Branch of Delhi police seized the large consignment of cannabis (ganja) which was being transported to Delhi for further distribution. Three people including two relatives were apprehended."The Cannabis was being brought in a mini truck from Odisha for supply in the national capital," a senior Crime Branch official said.The Delhi Police has so far seized more than 16 quintal cannabis, 4 quintal poppy husk and more than 190 kg smack and heroin and around 27 kg chars this year.

Teenager, male friend attacked with chemical in Vikaspuri, 1 detained

A teenager and her male friend were allegedly attacked with chemical by an unidentified person while they were on a motorcycle in the Vikaspuri area of the national capital, the police said."One boy aged 24 years along with his female friend aged 19 years were going together on a motorcycle when some chemical was thrown on them by some unknown person. We have detained one person in connection with the case," the police said on Wednesday adding that the incident occurred on Tuesday.Both the victims refused to give any statement on the day of the incident but approached the Vikaspuri police station the next day. They have been released from the hospital.
