Study shows success of measles vaccine campaigns in India
A new report now says that a mass measles vaccination campaign saved thousands of children's lives in India between 2010 and 2013. The study was published today in eLife.According to the study, the findings suggest that eliminating deaths from measles in India could be possible, although it will require continued diligence to ensure high immunisation rates among Indian children and direct mortality monitoring.The results may also help to encourage greater uptake of vaccinations in children across the world.There have been substantial decreases in the number of deaths from measles over the last 30 years. Statins linked to higher diabetes risk: Study
A new study now finds that individuals who take cholesterol-lowering statins may be at higher risk for developing high blood sugar levels, insulin resistance, and eventually type 2 diabetes.The study was published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.Experts examined information from 9,535 individuals older than 45 years of age who were free from diabetes at the start of the population-based Rotterdam Study and were followed up to 15 years.When compared with participants who never used statins, those who used statins tended to have higher concentrations of serum fasting insulin and insulin resistance.Participants who used statins had a 38 per cent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes during the study. Cipla to launch cinacalcet hydrochloride tablets in US
Drug major Cipla and its subsidiary Cipla USA Wednesday announced a phased launch of generic cinacalcet hydrochloride tablets, used in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) in adult patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, in the US market. The launch, however, is a subject of ongoing litigation, Cipla said in a regulatory filing. Cipla said, its cinacalcet hydrochloride tablets in the strengths of 30mg, 60mg and 90mg) is generic therapeutic equivalent version of Sensipar, a branded drug marketed by Amgen Inc. Cinacalcet tablets are indicated for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) in adult patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, for the treatment of hypercalcemia in adult patients with Parathyroid Carcinoma, and for treatment of severe hypercalcemia in adult patients with primary HPT who are unable to undergo parathyroidectomy. Family members of patient Shiva Prasad Goud staged a protest at Yashoda Hospital in Malakpet on Tuesday alleging that the Kidney of the patient was removed without their knowledge by the doctors while operating on a tumour in his stomach. "On February 26, we admitted my brother Shiva Prasad Goud in Yashoda Hospital after he was having a tumour in his stomach. A team of doctors said the tumour can be removed from his stomach and he will be fine. Yesterday around 11a.m., Dr. Uma Shankar and his team has operated my brother and they said they have removed the tumour and he will get conscious in a few hours. Rare tumour surgically removed from rabbit's chest
A rare tumour protruding from the chest of a rabbit was surgically removed by veterinarians here recently. The tumour was weighing 500 gram.The tumour had it difficult for the nine-year-old rabbit to walk, as the tumour was dangling from the chest. It could have been fatal in case the tumour found a cut."It wasn't life-threatening right now, but the bleeding could have killed the rabbit. So the surgery was necessary," veterinarian Nihar Jayakar, who performed the surgery, told ANI on Tuesday.A ninety-minute surgery was conducted on the rabbit after the blood test showed that the liver and kidney functions were normal."We did the blood test before giving anaesthesia. Luckily, nothing was abnormal. So we went ahead with the surgery," said Jayakar.The rabbit has since recovered and gained 200 gram in the past 10 days. Jayakar said the tumour, although rare, is 'well documented' and he plans to present this unusual medical case in an international conference.
Judicial panel prejudiced, says Apollo Hospitals
The Apollo Hospitals Tuesday alleged in the Madras High Court that the Justice Arumughaswamy Commission, probing the death of late chief minister Jayalalithaa, was prejudiced against it. Resuming submissions before a bench comprising Justice R Subbiah and Justice Krishnan Ramasamy on the hospital's petition opposing the panel going into medical treatment given to Jayalalitthaa, senior counsel P S Raman also claimed that confidential documents had been leaked to the media. He referred to reports regarding the Rs 1.17 crore food bill, part of the bill raised for hospitalisation of Jayalalithaa, and alleged it was released to the media by the Commission Secretary. The counsel further said the commission had summoned the senior most doctors of the hospital who had treated Jayalalithaa to appear before it giving just one day's time despite them having prior appointments with the patients. Drug firm Lupin on Tuesday said it in alliance with Natco Pharma has received nod from the US health regulator to market generic Imatinib Mesylate tablets used for treatment of certain types of cancer. The product is a generic version of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation's Gleevec tablets in the same strengths, Lupin said in a filing to BSE. Lupin and Natco Pharma have received final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to market generic Imatinib Mesylate tablets, 100 mg and 400 mg, the filing said. As per IQVIA MAT December 2018 data, Imatinib Mesylate tablets, 100 mg (base) and 400 mg (base), had annual sales of approximately USD 655 million in the US, Lupin said. Drug firm Alembic Pharmaceuticals Tuesday said its joint venture firm Aleor Dermaceuticals has received approval from the US health regulator for its generic Clobetasol Propionate ointment, used for relief of symptoms of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. The company's JV, Aleor Dermaceuticals Ltd, has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for its abbreviated new drug application for Clobetasol Propionate ointment USP, 0.05 per cent, Alembic Pharmaceuticals said in a filing to BSE. The product is a generic version of Glaxo Wellcome Inc's Temovate ointment in the same strength, it added. According to IQVIA, Clobetasol Propionate ointment USP, 0.05 per cent, has an estimated market size of USD 63 million for twelve months ending December 2018, Alembic Pharmaceuticals said. UK patient 'free' of HIV after stem cell treatment
A UK male patient's HIV has become "undetectable" following a stem cell transplant -- in only the second such case of its kind in the world, scientists led by an Indian-origin researcher reported Tuesday in a case study published in the journal Nature. The patient, who has not been named, was diagnosed with HIV in 2003 and advanced Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2012. He had chemotherapy to treat the Hodgkin's cancer and, in addition, stem cells were implanted into the patient from a donor resistant to HIV, leading to both his cancer and HIV going into remission. The patient, who was being treated for cancer, has now been in remission from HIV for 18 months and is no longer taking HIV drugs, the BBC reported.
