The Pakur District Mining officer Thursday informed the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited to take immediate steps to control fire that has been spotted in the seam of Pachuwada central coal bloc at Amrapada in the district. The bloc has been closed from April 1, 2015 following an order of the Supreme Court on allegations of irregularities in coal bloc allocations during the previous UPA government. "Today, I informed the officials of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, the holder of patta of the bloc, and also sent a letter to them asking to take necessary steps in this regard," Pakur district Mining Officer Utam Kumar Biswas said here. He, however, said there was no need for panic as fire in the coal seam is a general phenomenon. According to locals of Pakur district, which is experiencing scorching heat conditions, fire in the coal seam was spotted five/six weeks ago. At least 40 people have died and dozens were injured in raids by armed bandits in eight remote Nigerian villages, the emergency services said on Thursday. Groups of gunmen riding motorcycles stormed into the farming and herding villages in Shiroro district of central Niger state on Sunday, firing indiscriminately and stealing cattle. "For now, 40 bodies have been recovered," Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) spokesman Ibrahim Audu Hussein told AFP. Sparing Gujarat after changing course, Cyclone Vayu Thursday began moving away from the state coast towards Oman, even as the danger of heavy winds and rain in coastal areas continued, officials said here. Though the "eye of the storm" is away from land, the cyclone's outer periphery would leave its impact on the coast, officials said. A 29-year-old man drowned in the sea here Thursday afternoon, a fire brigade official said. Mitun Kumar Kariyar was spotted drowning near Bandra Bandstand, a popular tourist haunt in the western suburbs. A fire brigade team rescued him and brought him out to the shore but he was declared dead before admission at a hospital, the official added. Slabs of top two floors of a four- storey commercial building collapsed near here Thursday afternoon, but no casualty was reported, said Fire Brigade officials. The slabs of the building, located near the Dombivili railway station, caved in at around 1.30 pm, said Namdeo Chowdhari, Sub-Officer (Fire Brigade), Kalyan Dombivili Municipal Corporation (KDMC). No one was injured in the mishap, he said. He said the four-storey structure housed about a dozen shops on the ground floor, while the first floor was occupied by a restaurant. The second floor housed a marriage hall, while the third and fourth floors were empty, Chowdhari said. A Mumbai-bound Air India Express fight carrying 185 passengers on board was forced to return to the airport here Thursday due to a bird hit, an airline official said. All the passengers escaped unhurt in the incident which took place around 1.45 pm and an alternative plane has been put in service to fly the stranded passengers to their destination, he said. "Air India Express flight IX-435, operating on Kochi- Mumbai route experienced bird hit during take off. It departed at 1.25 pm from Kochi for Mumbai and landed back at 2 pm," the official said. All the 185 passengers on board are safe, he said. A team of Air India engineers along with some equipment has flown from Mumbai to inspect the aircraft and make it airworthy, he said. Another aircraft is scheduled to carry the passengers to Mumbai around 7 pm, he added.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Thursday assured the Odisha government that the Centre will provide technical support for restoration of power, telecom and housing sectors to the state which was ravaged by the cyclone Fani last month, a senior official said here. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday reviewed the Navy's preparedness along the Maharashtra and Gujarat coast in view of cyclone Vayu, officials said. Senior Navy officials briefed Singh at a meeting in naval headquarters here during which he was apprised about various measures being taken by the force to deal with possible scenarios, they said. A 26-year-old armyman was rescued by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Thursday after he was swept into the sea here. The Pune-based Army personnel (name not disclosed), who was holidaying in Goa, slipped from the rocks and fell into the choppy waters near Cabo da Rama Fort in South Goa district. A lifeguard of Drishti Lifesaving Services, which guards the state's beaches, tried to reach him but the high waves made it impossible, said its spokesperson.
