Metro services hit by snag, passenger unrest in evening peak

Kolkata Metro Services were disrupted for around three houses during the evening peak hours on Monday after a train developed a snag due to power tripping at a station and the subsequent passenger unrest. The train developed a technical glitch due to power tripping at Belgachia Metro station in north Kolkata at around 6.11 pm, Metro Railway CPRO Indrani Banerjee said. "We decided to run truncated services from Central station to Kavi Subhas (terminal station in the south). But after one truncated service, passengers declined to disembark the train at Central station," she said. "We had also run truncated services from Maidan station and Tollygunge station. But due to non-cooperation of passengers the truncated services were also stopped," the CPRO said. Severe cyclonic storm likely to hit Gujarat on June 12 night: IMD

A severe cyclonic storm is likely to hit Gujarat on June 12 night with a wind speed of 130-140 kilometres per hour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday night. The Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD said the deep depression over east-central and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep lays centred at about 320 km northwest of Aminidivi (Lakshadweep), 680 km south-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra) and 840 km south-southeast of Veraval (Gujarat). "It is very likely to intensify further into a Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours and into a Severe Cyclonic Storm in subsequent 24 hours. "It is very likely to move nearly northward and cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Veraval and Diu region as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speed 130-140 kmph gusting to 155 kmph during midnight of June 12," the Cyclone Warning Division bulletin said. Vehicles arrive in Leh after snow clearance on Manali-Sarchu road

First civilian vehicles arrived in Leh after Manali-Sarchu road was cleared of snow by the Border Road Organisation (BRO) earlier today.After the snow clearing operation was carried out by BRO, the stretch was opened for civilian traffic in the morning today.BRO has advised civil passengers and travellers on the highway to exercise due precaution as there are always chances of landslides and avalanches enroute because of heavy snow build-up.Manali-Sarchu road connects the high altitude Himalayan town with Leh in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. Flight ops at Mum airport on hold as rains affect visibility

Flight operations at the city airport were put on hold after heavy rains brought down visibility below the required limit, a Mubai International Airport Limited (MIAL) spokesperson said Monday night. "Due to heavy rains the visibility has gone down and the operations is on hold for the last 13 minutes," the spokesperson said in a voice message. Due to this, a Newark-bound United Airlines flight from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj international airport was diverted to Delhi, the spokesperson said. "Runway 09x27 (the main runway) will be handed over to the air traffic control any time soon to restart operations," she said.

17,000 ANM, GNM posts in Rajasthan to be filled soon: State minister

Rajasthan Health and Medical Education Minister Raghu Sharma Monday said around 17,000 posts of auxiliary nurse midwife (ANMs) and general nursing and midwife (GNMs) lying vacant will be filled soon. Reviewing health services in the state at a meeting here, he also said necessary equipment will be made available at hospitals to provide round-the-clock delivery of services. Sharma stressed on the need for providing delivery services at all hospitals in the state, apart from achieving the targets of institutional delivery. The minister also said directions have been given to replace defunct ambulances with new ones. Presently, 732 emergency ambulances are functioning under the '108' service. He also directed officials to make operations of medical mobile unit and medical mobile van operations more effective in rural areas.

HC rejects insurance company's plea over police action in cheating case

The Madras High Court Monday declined to restrain the city police from pulling up the head honchos of Cholamandalam MS General Insurance Company who have been accused of cheating. Justice N Anand Venkatesh rejected a plea from the company for a court direction to not harass its employees over a case of cheating registered by the Central Crime Branch (CCB). An FIR was filed following a complaint from the owner of a Jaguar car against the insurer for failing to give compensation for the damage caused to his vehicle during the Kerala floods in August last. When the case came up for hearing, the judge clarified that once an FIR was filed, the court cannot grant such relief and that the petitioner can only approach the court concerned to seek anticipatory bail. Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot Monday said it is the government's priority to increase the reach of the MGNREGA scheme and ensure timely payment of workers engaged under it. Delay in payment to workers will not be accepted and benefits of the scheme should reach as many people as possible, an official statement quoted the deputy chief minister as saying. Pilot, who holds the Panchayati Raj and PWD portfolios, is touring Jalore and Sirohi districts. Missing AN-32 aircraft search enters day 8; hunt intensified

Aerial search and rescue operations were intensified to locate the AN-32 aircraft of the Indian Air Force with 13 personal people on board, which went missing after take-off from Assam's Jorhat airbase on June 3, as the hunt entered its eighth day on Monday, the IAF said."Aerial search and rescue operations (SAR) were carried out by helicopters and C-130s during the day. Aerial search operation resumed on Monday after a gap of two days as efforts to trace a missing transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force continued for eighth consecutive days in remote Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh, officials said. 3 killed, 27 injured as tractor-trolley overturns in Rajasthan's Baran

Two women and a boy were killed and 27 others injured when a tractor-trolley overturned in Rajasthan's Baran district on Monday, police said. The vehicle was going to Kota from Baran when the incident occurred in the Mangrol area, they said. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which overturned and fell into a roadside riverbed, Mangrol Station House Officer (SHO) Ashish Kumar Bhargava said. He added that two women -- Sona (18) and Sanju (35) -- and a boy, Sonu (15), were killed in the accident. The condition of two among the injured was critical, Bhargava said. Chief minister Ashok Gehlot expressed grief over the incident and condoled the deaths. Southern Railway continues to be miffed by alarm chain-pulling

Nearly a year after Southern Railway raised concerns over 'trivial' reasons for stopping trains by pulling the alarm chain, the menace continues. The Southern Railway (SR) said Rs 3.72 lakh was collected as fine and 774 people prosecuted from January till May this year, a figure higher than the previous Rs 2.8 lakh collected from 737 passengers. "Though the Indian Railways is striving hard to maintain the punctuality of trains being operated under its control, the menace of Alarm Chain Pulling (ACP) is adjudged as one of the major factors for the delayed operation of trains at the national-level," a statement issued by SR said. said. Fire in MP HC building doused in a few minutes

Sewri mishap: Death toll rises to two

The death toll in the Sunday car accident in Sewri-Wadala area climbed to two Monday with a 25-year-old victim succumbing to his injuries, police said. Six persons, including the car driver, his wife, and four pedestrians still continue to be in hospital, an official said. The incident occurred Sunday when the SUV driver Shahbaz Wadi (26) lost control over the vehicle near Zakaria Bunder bus stop and hit people walking on the road. Two sisters die in fire

A two-year-old girl and her 15-day-old sister were burnt alive in a fire that occurred in their thatched hut in Banaskantha district of Gujarat, police said Monday. The incident occurred Sunday evening in tribal-dominated Bhedla village, an Amirgadh police station official said. "We learnt about the incident on Monday morning as the village is located in remote area, and rushed to the spot. However, the last rites of the two girls were already performed by their relatives," said Amirgadh police station sub-inspector C P Chaudhari. He said the fire occurred when Mungriben Mali, the mother of the girls, was preparing tea in their hut. "Mali tried to save her daughters, who were sleeping, but could not help them as the fire spread rapidly. On heavy rainfall alert,Guj deploys NDRF in coastal Saurashtra

Gujarat has been put on alert following IMD prediction of the deep depression in the Arabian Sea developing into a severe cyclonic storm and causing heavy rainfall in the coastal areas in the coming days, a senior official said Monday. With the warning of a heavy rainfall in parts of Gujarat, the state government has decided to deploy NDRF personnel in coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch from Tuesday morning. The government will also put the Army, the Navy and the Coast Guard on alert. 2 dead in mishap as pre-monsoon rain turns road slippery

Two people were killed in an accident involving a concrete mixer truck, an autorickshaw and a bus in the early hours of Monday in Chembur after pre- monsoon rains made the road slippery, police said. In the accident that took place in Amar Mahal area, the concrete mixer truck hit the autorickshaw which then smashed into a bus, a Tilaknagar police station official said. "The driver and two passengers in the autorickshaw were injured. Two of them succumbed to injuries in Rajawadi Hospital nearby," he said. He identified the deceased as passenger Sufiyan Ansari (25) and driver Subhash Bind (55). Passenger Mona Mirza (55) is undergoing treatment, he added.
