Long distance, insecure jobs keep Bihar migrants from voting in polls

For thousands of migrant workers from Bihar living across Tamil Nadu, the idea of travelling over 2,000 km home to cast their vote in the two-phase elections this November remains a distant dream, as their insecure jobs barely allow them to take a day off. Families that left their home state and settled in Tamil Nadu for low-paying jobs also do not see travel as an option this poll season. "Most of us in the construction sector stay at the site, cook our own food, and eat there. We rarely go out. We work on holidays and sometimes past sunset to earn a little extra for our families," said Ajay Kumar, a construction worker. "In case I decide to go to Patna, I would need six days for the round trip and a few more to spend with my family. So, I may not go home," he added. Many families from Bihar are now spread across Tamil Nadusome as far as Kanyakumari, bordering Keralaand work in sectors such as rubber glove manufacturing, coir production, domestic work, and other industries. Mississippi school homecoming celebrations turn deadly after 6 killed

High school homecoming celebrations in Mississippi ended in gunfire, with two separate shootings on opposite sides of the state Friday night that left at least six people dead and many more injured, authorities said. Four of the dead were killed in downtown Leland, after a high school football homecoming game in the Mississippi Delta region on the state's western edge, a state senator said Saturday. About 20 people were injured in the gunfire after people gathered in downtown Leland following the game, state Senator Derrick Simmons said. Of the 20 wounded, four were in critical condition and flown from a hospital in nearby Greenville to a larger medical centre in the state capital city of Jackson, Simmons told The Associated Press. Simmons said he was being updated on developments by the Washington County Sheriff's Office as well as from other law enforcement authorities in the Delta. People were just congregating and having a good time in the downtown of Leland, Simmons said of th

Tourism sector expected to grow with more than 25% CAGR: Gajendra Shekhawat

Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Saturday said the tourism sector contributes Rs 20 lakh crore to India's GDP, and is expected to grow at a rate of more than 25 per cent. "Tourism now contributes over Rs 20 lakh crore to our national GDP. It provides livelihood to more than 84 million people," he said, addressing the 'MP Travel Mart', an event organised by the Madhya Pradesh tourism department. "India welcomed 20 million inbound tourists last year, and 2.94 billion tour trips were made by domestic travelers. Tourism sector in India is estimated to grow with a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of more than 25 per cent," he added. "These numbers tell a deeper story. The story of empowerment. Artisans finding new markets, families running home-stays, women entrepreneurs creating eco retreats, local youths becoming confidant guides and hosts," the tourism minister said. At the heart of this transformation lies the belief that tourism is a national priority, not an ..

Trump directs Pentagon to use available funds to pay troops during shutdown

President Donald Trump said Saturday that he has directed the Defense Department to use all available funds to ensure US troops are paid Wednesday despite the government shutdown, a short-term fix that will not apply to the hundreds of thousands of federal workers who have been furloughed. Trump said in a social media post that he was acting because our Brave Troops will miss the paychecks they are rightfully due on October 15th. The Republican president's directive removes one of the pressure points that could have forced Congress into action, likely ensuring that the shutdown now in its 11th day and counting extends into a third week and possibly beyond. But no similar action seems forthcoming for federal employees also working without pay while thousands are now being laid off during the lapse in government operations. The White House budget office started the layoffs on Friday. Trump blamed Democrats and said he was exercising his authority as commander in chief to direct ...

Blast at Tennessee explosives plant leaves 19 missing, feared dead: Sheriff

An explosion at a Tennessee military munitions plant Friday left 19 people missing and feared dead, authorities said. Humphreys Count Sheriff Chris Davis said it was one of the most devastating scenes he's ever seen. He did not specify how many people were killed but referred to the 19 missing as souls and said officials were still speaking to family. The blast, which people reported hearing and feeling miles away, occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems in rural Tennessee. The company's website says it makes and tests explosives at an eight-building facility that sprawls across wooded hills in the Bucksnort area, about 97 km southwest of Nashville. The cause of the explosion, which Davis called devastating," was not immediately known, and the investigation could take days, the sheriff said. Aerial footage of the aftermath by WTVF-TV showed the explosion had apparently obliterated one of the facility's hilltop buildings, leaving only smoldering wreckage and the burnt-out shells of .
